In March 2020 The Travel Industry Hub launched a series of webinars aimed at the Australian travel and tourism sector, to fill a need for information, conversation and occasional humour during the unfolding COVID-19 crisis. The sessions have also been boosted by our ongoing partnership with Travel Daily, bringing interviews with key leaders and decision makers.

A not-to-be-missed opportunity to meet the Managing Director of Webjet, John Guscic, who will be interviewed by Bruce Piper of Travel Daily and travelBulletin.

DRIVING RECOVERY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Scott Barber began the first of a series of discussions on the role of data and technology in the recovery of the travel industry, joined by Rebecca Esterhuizen.

With an unexpected and sudden shift in landscape, the need to embrace technology is now stronger than ever, but how will this look for companies when investing will be driven by budget and staff availability?

What should agents, suppliers, wholesalers, buying groups, TMC's and others be looking towards as short and longer-term goals that ensure viable spending and tangible benefits?

Rebecca is Head of APAC for Traveltek, who have over 20 years experience of working in partnership with travel agents, tour operators, consortia, cruise specialists and airlines.

Scott Barber is former Managing Director ANZ for Travelport. Scott left Travelport in December 2019 to spend 2020 studying full time for an MBA.

DARREN RUDD, AFTA CEO:

FEDERAL BUDGET SUBMISSION

AFTA has now lodged its $125 million Federal Budget submission, and the entire industry is being urged to engage with their local members to get the message across.

Bruce Piper, publisher of Travel Daily and travelBulletin, will interview Darren Rudd again, this time discussing the National Mobilisation Program and the latest moves to support travel through the pandemic.

Darren joined the travel industry after several roles in government and corporate affairs with a range of organisations including the National Broadband Network, Tata Consulting and Alcatel Lucent. He has worked internationally including postings in Hong Kong and China and holds a Bachelor of Information and Technology from the University of Wollongong and a Master of Business Administration from the University of NSW. As well as heading up AFTA Rudd is a board member of the Australia Council for the Arts.

Joel Katz joined CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) as Managing Director for Australasia and Asia in January 2017 bringing with him almost 30 years of international experience in the travel industry.

 

Joel was interviewed by Travel Daily and travelBulletin publisher Bruce Piper, in the third in a series talking to industry bodies about the current thinking going on behind the headlines during the crisis. 

 

In his role as Managing Director at CLIA, Joel Katz heads a Sydney and Singapore based team that is responsible for the promotion and development of the cruise industry in the region through trade
relations, industry training, and advocacy activities on behalf of CLIA’s members, including in dealings with government.

DARREN RUDD, AFTA CEO

Darren Rudd was appointed as the CEO of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) in June 2020, amidst the most turbulent period in its history.

Bruce Piper, publisher of Travel Daily will interview Darren in a  'Getting To Know You' session. It's an opportunity for the wider industry to understand more about both Darren and the organisation's current areas of focus.

The interview will take place here at The Travel Industry Hub, in Sydney, and is introduced by Richard Taylor.

After an argument about whose webinars are best, we found out from Josh about some of his ideas around the agent of the future, the future for mobile consultants and much more. It was a really interesting chat with a deep thinker of the industry.

Richard spoke to Wendy Harch of Travel At 60, to find out about what Baby Boomers will be looking for once it's safe to travel.

Travel At 60 is a division of Starts At 60, a media and community site with over a million visitors to its website each month that provides the Baby Boomer with news and all the information they need on money, health and travel.

Travel at 60 has surveyed members and we'll be exclusively revealing the details on topics such as what they're thinking about cruise, what destinations they plan on travelling to in 2020 and how important (or not?) health and sanitisation is in their travel decision-making process going forward.

With a background encompassing international sales and marketing, inbound marketing, wholesale, retail, product development, pricing and strategic planning, Wendy’s current role as the inaugural Chief Commercial Officer at Travel at 60 has seen the start-up travel company expand significantly in its first eighteen months of operation.

He moved into inbound tourism as Chief Operating Officer at Equity Travel Group before co-founding TTIH with Luke. He's also very good looking and smart, and yes I am writing this myself.

Richard meets Yasmine Gray and Julie Jones, for an introduction to accessible tourism and the many opportunities the industry has to attract this valuable and under-served market.

Did you know that that one in five people have a disability, which affects one in three households? Or that accessible tourism is worth over $10 billion a year to the Australian economy?

 

Yasmine is founder of getaboutable.com. She is a lifelong traveller, former scientist and public servant, and single mother, who happens to use a power wheelchair to overcome mobility limitations caused by multiple sclerosis. She has travelled extensively her whole life, including over 20 years with a disability.

Julie is the Executive Editor and Co-Founder of Travel Without Limits, and creator of the 'Have Wheelchair Will Travel' blog. Julie - a former travel agent - and her family have been travelling for over 20 years with son BJ, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when 5 months old.

An industry veteran of 28 years, Dennis is Joint CEO of Bunnik Tours and has for the last 5 years been chair of the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO). With travel running through his veins Dennis is a strong believer in industry collaboration to achieve a better outcome for all.

Together with CATO and industry colleagues, Dennis has been helping set the industry agenda and response to the COVID crisis.

Richard Taylor meets Di Lechner, CEO of Travel Addiction Group which encompasses the Addicted To Maldives brand.

Di has recently launched Addicted To Australia, bringing forward a longer-term tactical plan, and will discuss some of the challenges and drivers behind making the switch whilst maintaining the standards, service and experience of product that the brand is synonymous with.

The group focus on unique, boutique travel experiences with a penchant for luxury, and despite being a relative newcomer to the Australian travel industry after a successful career in recruitment and sales, Di's approach quickly led to Addicted To Maldives becoming the Destination Management Company of choice for some of Australia's best-known travel groups.

REINVENTION IN CORPORATE, RETAIL AND WHOLESALE

There's a distinct luxury feel to TTIH for this webinar, as Richard was joined by Penny Spencer and  Claudia Rossi Hudson. Di Lechner (pictured right) was unable to make it on the day, so we did a separate session!). The remaining duo discussed the reinvention of their respective businesses, post-lockdown.

Penny will discuss some of the challenges around corporate travel, Claudia talks leisure and Di will tell us more about the launch of 'Addicted To Australia' to complement 'Addicted to Maldives'.

Penny is one of the best-known faces of the Australian Travel Industry, having founded Spencer Travel in 1998.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL SPECIAL


Lauren Anderson quizzed sustainability experts Dayana Brooke and Tess Willcox on the future of sustainable tourism in the new world. The trio were joined by Richard Taylor, representing the know-nothing man in the street.

Much noise has been made within the industry over sustainable travel in recent years, but has that message reached the traveller? Will they care, post-COVID, and do we need to rethink how the concept is sold? Is it all just too hard?

In the first part of her series exploring how relationships in the travel industry will be conducted in the future, Sarah Arane hosted a panel of respected industry relationship managers for a really entertaining, no-holds-barred discussion about how the role of the ‘rep’ will be conducted.

When the industry begins its recovery, head office will be looking for greater return on investment. Will sales calls ever be the same? Can it all be done over Zoom? And was the industry due for a shakeup anyway?

TOURISM TUESDAYS: THE STAR HOTEL, WALHALLA

Richard Taylor and Michelle Lester-Smith chatted to Michael Leaney, the proprietor and operator of Walhalla’s Star Hotel.

The town of Walhalla, in Gippsland VIC, was once one of the richest in Australia that supported over 4,000 gold seekers, but is now home to a more modest 20 residents. Having been destroyed in 1951, Michael launched an ambitious plan to rebuild the famous gold-era hotel, which opened again in 1999. 

Regional areas have faced tremendous challenges in 2020, but they are far from over. How do regional people feel about the reintroduction of tourists, and what considerations should people sending those travellers be aware of? What challenges does a hotelier face when restrictions are imposed on some elements that made the property so appealing in the first place?

With more than 30 years in the industry, Michael is a passionate advocate for regional tourism for both domestic and international visitors, and is also a councillor in his local shire, known as the “councillor for tourism”.

We talked to Lauren Anderson, Sales & Networking Manager at World Resorts of Distinction.

2020 was to be Lauren’s year, having made the jump from a stable leadership role to chase her passion for sustainable tourism, having completed her Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Management in 2019.

Who knew that taking up a new role on the 1st of March was going to be met with so many challenges?

Her position may have shifted from optimist to realist over the past few months, but Lauren still believes that travel will forge a greener pathway going forward and sustainable tourism is about to hit its upswing.

We're joined by Sarah Arane and Jarrod Zurvas from Quark Expeditions.

Sarah graduated from the University of Technology Sydney in 2011 with a Bachelor of Environmental Science majoring in Marine Biology. A chance trip to explore Africa led to a slight diversion to the travel industry as a travel consultant at Flight Centre in Sydney. 8 years in the industry later, she is now Sales and Marketing Manager for Quark Expeditions in Asia Pacific

Jarrod has over 10 years sales and marketing experience across a number of channels including, Travel/Tourism and FMCG markets. In 2018, Jarrod joined Quark Expeditions as the Regional Sales Director Asia Pacific, based in Melbourne.

AAT KINGS

On Thursdays we're starting to talk to suppliers, to find out how they're working towards the future.  

Jes Lillis of AAT Kings joins us to talk about how the company is functioning during lockdown and its preparations for the new world.

 

Has the company had to change its focus and its sales process? How are teams working together remotely? Is demand expected in the traditional areas? And why does Jes wear her uniform when working at home during a lockdown?

 

Jes has worked within The Travel Corporation and its brands since 2013, with roles that have included Reservations and later  the Product team for Insight Vacations, and in 2019 shifting to the AAT Kings & Inspiring Journeys family as a Sales Manager. 

 

She is currently living by the motto #MakeLockDownWorkForYou, so it's fair to expect a positive session.

Fiona has been running her own social media management business for over 12 years. Simon Bernardi joined Richard to discuss making money in a post-COVID world.

Since travel agencies shifted focus towards the international market, much knowledge on travel within our own borders has been lost. What is the best way to sell to domestic travellers looking for holiday inspiration, whilst making money?

In the latest step of a lifelong career in the industry that included several years heading Qantas Holidays, Simon is currently Managing Partner at Australia and Beyond Holidays, an inbound agency that has recently announced a series of 'hand made travel journeys' for the domestic market.

This was a fascinating foray into the mind of one of the industry's most recognised characters, and one with plenty to say.

Richard quizzed Scott Barber and Satu Raunola-Spencer on the importance of remaining engaged with the industry during this shutdown, and how maintaining and expanding professional networks can bring about unexpected opportunities during brighter times.  

Satu is Director of Business Development, APAC for AirHelp, the world’s largest organisation specialising in air passenger rights. She is also Director and Board Member of Sydney-based tech start-up Vloggi and a Director at management consultancy Kipina Pty Ltd. She has managed her own travel marketing and PR consultancy, Finnesse Communications, and worked with Amadeus IT Pacific as Marketing Manager for 6 years.

Scott was Travelport’s Managing Director for the Pacific region until December 2019 when he commenced studying for his MBA full time at the University of Technology Sydney. He was responsible for growing Travelport’s footprint in the region, which includes driving revenue, securing new business and identifying key strategic opportunities.
